Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between Free and Premier memberships?

When you register as a host or helper you automatically become a Free member (hosts need to be Approved first). Free helper members can only see the contact details of some hosts (the International network is completely free for helpers). If a helper upgrades from Free to Premier membership they will be able to view all provided host details and reviews. If a host upgrades to Premier membership, they will be able to contact all helpers.

2. How can a host upgrade a helper to premier?

If you have a great helper staying with you whom you would like to reward their help by paying to upgrade them to premier helper membership, then you can do so by paying their upgrade fee. For further information see link on "News Update for Hosts" page when hosts first sign-in.

3. What is HelpX's policy towards insurance?

HelpX does not supply any kind of insurance itself but does highly recommend that helpers have some kind of suitable insurance before staying with a host. See helper rule number 7. Also, hosts may wish to enquire with their property insurance company to see what their policy is towards cover if an invited person to their home steals or causes malicious damage. If they don't cover for this kind of event you may wish to enquire if they can provide a policy that does.

4. Is there any age limits for being a helper?

You need to be a least 18 to be a helper. Under 18's are allowed if accompanied with a parent provided that is acceptable and agreed with the host. There is no upper age limit so long as you are fit and healthy enough to participate. Though do note that each host operates differently and may have their own preferred age range for helpers.

5. I have filled in the registration form but when I click the 'Submit Details' button it fails to send my entry. Why is that and what can I do to rectify this problem?

Sometimes its possible to have problems submitting information from your computer to the HelpX database. This is generally due to Internet transmission problems which is beyond our control. If you experience this problem the best thing to do is click the 'Back' button on your browser, re-enter your passwords and 'Submit' again. If this also fails, please try again later, when hopefully a better connection is available.

We suggest that it you have a lot of information to enter, you may wish to type it into a word processor beforehand and then copy and paste it into the registration form. Besides there is no need to get all your information included first time as you can modify it as many times as you wish. If you find you are unable to register successfully then contact us for assistance, via the feedback page.

6. When I submit my details I get an error message?

As Help Exchange is being continually developed coding bugs or errors occasionally escape our testing. If you ever get an error message, please email a copy of the full error message to us and we will fix it asap before the same error causes any further problems. We are very grateful for any details of errors brought to our attention.

7. How do I update my host listing?

If you have previously registered as a host and now wish to update your details then go back to the home page then click on your network link e.g. 'New Zealand' then enter your email address and password into the 'Host Sign In' box then click the 'Sign In' button. You will then be taken to your host update form. Here any of your details can be updated then resubmitted by clicking the 'Submit Details' button located at the bottom of the page.

If you just wish to obtain a new 'Last Updated' date without modifying any details then just click the 'Submit Details' button. Please note that just signing in will not update your 'Last Updated' date.

8. I have registered as a helper but I intend to visit more than one country and these countries are not in the same network. How can I join them all?

As you cannot be in more than one country at a time, select the network that includes the first country you wish to visit. Then when the time comes to move to the next one, sign in and change the network that includes next country to visit.

You can still view hosts in all networks regardless of what network you are currently registered under, it just means that hosts looking for helpers will generally just be looking out for helpers listed under their network.

9. I have registered as a host, can I view other host listings?

Yes you can. All you need to do is sign in as a host and then click the 'View Hosts' button shown in the top right hand corner. You can also view helpers who have opted to leave a description about themselves by clicking on the 'View Helpers' button shown in the top left hand corner.

10. I am a host and wish to write reference for a helper but I am unable to find their profile?

Helpers are only searchable within the network for which they are currently assigned to and if they have included a self-description, which has been submitted or updated within the last 3 months. All current helper profiles can be viewed if you know the email address for which they are registered with, by using the 'Check Helper' box on the 'View Helpers' page.

11. Why do I need a password?

A password is required so only you can sign in together with your sign in email address and access member information. It also, ensures that only you can change your supplied details as required. We recommend that you do not use the same password as your email account. Your password can be changed whenever and as often as you like. This applies also to your email address and most other details submitted.

12. I have forgotten my password, what should I do?

If you have forgotten your password you need to go back to the home page then click on your network link e.g. 'New Zealand'. Here you will see two links marked 'Forgot your Password?', one is for hosts, located in the 'Host Sign in' box, the other is for helpers, located in the 'Helper Sign in' box. Click the correct one. You will then be able to enter and submit your email address. Your password will then be emailed to the email address you provided when you registered.

13. Do I need a work visa to be helper?

Many countries require a work visa in order to be a helper. Each country has its own rules on this matter. Some countries including Australia and Canada now allow volunteer work in exchange for accommodation and meals schemes to be undertaken on a tourist visa provided it is not the main reason for visiting that country and is seen as being an incidental activity to what is otherwise a holiday trip. Several countries including Australia, New Zealand, UK and Canada have Working Holiday Schemes for young people from certain countries, which you may wish to investigate further.

14. Can Help Exchange assist with work visa applications or travel expences?

Help Exchange can not assist with visa applications or travel expenses, nor can any of our hosts, so please do not ask. Hosts maybe able to arrange pick ups from local bus or train stations.
