My husband and I moved to this 240 acre farm in the South Burnett Region of South East Qld 2 years ago and have recently moved into a purpose built cottage (to reduce our footprint) relying on rainwater for the house and bore water for the gardens and to reduce our footprint further we have installed a composting toilet. 40 fruit trees have been planted and raised garden beds made which is the start of our edible oasis. Our place includes the small town's original Post office (1914) which has a reputation of being the smallest post office in Australia, this is now used as your cosy air-conditioned guest room with a sofa bed. Our property is 33ha of native forest with two creeks located in subtropical NSW, 15 km from Lismore and 50 min from Byron Bay. Our focus is on enhancing the natural habitat for the abundant wildlife including wallabies, goannas, echidnas and birds. Varied tasks include assisting us with gardening, bush regeneration, maintaining bush tracks, general house and property maintenance. Guildford is home to one of Victoria's largest river red gums. It is over 500 years old. It's a very small town with only a general store, primary school & pub, half way between Castlemaine & Daylesford. We have been on this land for 1 and a half years & have started using permaculture principals & design. So far, we have completed the fence line, (to keep the rabbits out) & joyously have begun some planting both in the food forest, cottage garden & in the veggie patch. We are a fit and active couple in our 70s who have recently bought a home (2021) right by the water on Lamb Island in Moreton Bay, 30km from Brisbane. It has great views over the bay and has good access to fishing, crabbing, safe swimming and boating. There is a fast and regular ferry to the mainland that takes 20 minutes. There are also several other islands nearby that can be explored including North Stradbroke Island that has wonderful beaches and walks and lots of wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, turtles and dolphin and - from June to October - humpback whales. Over the next two years we will renovate and paint the home, install new kitchen and two bathrooms.
