Ipswich is a lovely place in itself and is about an hours drive to Brisbane, about an hour to the Gold Coast, about an hour and a half to the Sunshine Coast or about an hour to the mountains in Toowoomba. Many visitors to Australia assume it will be hot here and in summer it is, in winter the temperature can be very cold. Make sure to pack some warm winter clothing if travelling in the winter months. I don't have fans or air conditioning so the temperature is what it is. It's hot in summer and cold in winter. Electricity has become too expensive for me to run appliances. We are on an 70 acre farm in North Pope County, Illinois and are virtually surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest. Having been on this farm for 13 years, we are still developing infrastructure and are continuing to plant in the orchard and various berries as well as establishing and expanding garden and crop areas. We are a GMO, herbicide and pesticide free farm in all of our outdoor areas. As we are far away from "modern agricultural" property, we feel that we should have no problems with cross pollination of our crops with GMO's or damage/exposure from/to ag chemicals. There are many projects currently in process or in the planning stages. This summer/fall we hope to get new water and electric lines ran to all the barns and the greenhouse as well as get a fiber studio framed in and get the finishing touches on the greenhouses. Hello Potential Volunteers My name is Paul and it was my dream to change my lifestyle from being an office worker to becoming an alpaca farmer.... here we are 14 years later with 100 alpacas, each individually cherishes with names and unique personalities, plus an assortment of other animals all needing our love :) I have three children: Liam (21), Dylan (9) and Oscar (6), and our 100-acre farm is home to approx.100 alpacas, plus llamas, peacocks, hens, mini pigs, a cat named Sexy, and our farm dog Malta. This year we are expecting 20 'cria' (baby alpacas) and each one will need our help so they can thrive! The bedroom is now fully booked until end of September. Spring update I still need help in May and June. I am in the process of selling the house so need help as I declutter and smarten up. I still need help in the grounds. Some repairs and general upkeep and maintenance jobs, clearing paths, fighting the undergrowth, tending plants and watering. When it rains there are plenty of indoor jobs to help with: shopping, cooking , cleaning, decluttering and sorting stuff. Computer assistance is always a bonus. There may be opportunities to help with voluntary projects nearby including the Storehouse with its community lunch once a week, Saturday Town Hall open house. These are all ways to meet local people. There is a community cinema every Sunday night and a folk club every Tuesday. This very big old house with woodland garden is tucked behind the main street of a busy, small Scottish town. I have no pets but there are resident deer, squirrels and even badgers to look out for!
